Li Lianjie is one of the most well known faces in martial arts movies, but you probably know him better as Jet Li . From martial arts movies in the ’80s and ’90s up to modern-day franchises like The Expendables, Li has been an action star for as long as many moviegoers can remember. But fans were sent into a frenzy after a 2018 photo of the actor appearing aged beyond his years went viral. The snapshot was almost unrecognizable as the great martial arts star. Born in 1963, the martial artist would have just turned 55 at the time the buzzworthy picture was posted, but many thought he appeared to be 20 or 30 years older. People made their concerns known all around the world, but is there really any reason to worry? Here are the real reasons why Jet Li looks completely different now…

Jet Li is an undisputed martial arts superstar who has given the world some of the greatest fighting moves (and movies) in existence. Yet, recent years have brought worrying whispers that insinuate all might not be well in the Li-land. As South China Morning Post notes, the actor has admitted to battling some pretty unnerving health troubles, and some 2018 pictures of him showed Li looking far older and frailer than a 55-year-old lifelong top athlete who starred in Expendables 3 just a few years earlier should have any right to be. What mystery disease could do such damage to a man? What’s the truth about Jet Li’s illness?

Since 1978, the incidence of recreational water illness (RWI) outbreaks of acute gastrointestinal illness has substantially increased. In 2013, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) released a report that found fecal matter in 58% of public swimming pools. The study looked at 161 samples from pool filter concentrates.
The study detected E. coli in over 50% of the pool samples, indicating that swimmers frequently introduced fecal material into pools. This could mean that pathogens can be transmitted to others through the use of these pools and recreational water activities.
Although the study found E. coli at higher rates in municipal pools, pools that required a membership or were located within a club still tested positive 49% of the time.
Some of the organisms detected in the study included:
• Pseudomonas aeruginosa
• E. coli
• Giardia intestinalis
• Cryptosporidium
Contrary to popular belief, chlorine does not kill all germs instantly. There are germs today that are very tolerant to chlorine and were not known to cause human disease until recently. Once these germs get in the pool, it can take anywhere from minutes to days for chlorine to kill them.
Recreational water illnesses are caused by germs spread by swallowing, breathing in mists or aerosols of, or having contact with contaminated water in swimming pools, hot tubs, water parks, water play areas, interactive fountains, lakes, rivers, or oceans. Recreational water illnesses can also be caused by chemicals in the water or chemicals that evaporate from the water and cause indoor air quality problems.
These are just a few things to know about microbial contaminants and recreational water illnesses, to learn more about this other health and safety or environmental and indoor air quality issues, please visit the websites shown on the screen.

After over 7 weeks of lockdown restrictions, and adventures limited to our doorsteps, we have found ourselves yearning for wild spaces & human connection. If you’re also in need of a little wilderness & inspiration, we hope you’ll enjoy our new film.
Hydrotherapy is a short film by Friction Collective. It’s a story of adaptation, strength & re-wilding set in the raw and beautiful landscapes of Snowdonia National park. Laura has not only overcome a life changing illness through wild swimming, but has also found a greater connection to the natural world. This has ignited her mission to make a stand for the natural environment, and protect wild waters and wild spaces across the UK.
While restrictions on open water swimming have been lifted in some parts of the UK, this activity still comes with significant risks. With very few lifeguards on duty at the moment, and cold water temperatures, now is not the time to risk your safety, or risk putting any additional strains on emergency services. We really hope that you feel inspired to start planning some wild swimming adventures, but for now we urge you to hold off from participating in any form of open water swimming. Further information is available from the RNLI & Outdoor Swimmer.
Thank you for watching.
Find out more about Laura’s incredible research & environmental projects.
